The Fighting Gobbler Regiment
The marching band is made up of thirty-nine students, all dedicated to performing at consistently superior levels. They spend two weeks over the summer in camp to learn marching basics and drill, and to prepare their competition show. They practice daily through August, September, and October, competing at least five weekends through the fall, and performing at all home football games as well. This year, they won their class at 4 out of 5 competitions, only coming in 2nd at JMU's Parade of Champions out of a class of 11 bands. They won grand champion over several classes at Blast in the Draft and Powhatan's Fall Classic. At Harrisonburg's SVMI, they advanced to a classless finals competition, competing against bands with more than 100 members, and placed 4th overall. At State Marching Assessment, they were given three superior ratings, and four excellent ratings for an overall rating of Excellent. These students will also perform in two holiday parades and community celebrations over the winter.
The BHS Wind Symphony is an auditioned ensemble, performing grade 5 and 6 literature. These students perform in the Falling Into Fine Arts Concert, Holiday Concert, Concert Performance Assessment, Prism Concert, Spring Concert, Memorial Day Concert, and Graduation Day Ceremonies.
The BHS Concert Band performs at the Holiday Concert, Concert Performance Assessment, Spring Concert, and Graduation Day Ceremonies. Students in this ensemble range from four years of experience to brand new players. All are welcome to this fun group of students.
Our percussion class performs with the Wind Symphony and Concert Band, as well as on their own. They have been working hard on small ensemble pieces as well as their concert literature, while learning the specifics of the largest family of instruments. We are also building an indoor percussion ensemble to perform this winter.
The Jazz Band meets during zero block, so these dedicated kids make it here more than an hour before school actually starts. They have a lot of fun, and perform for the community at each major concert, as well as fundraiser events for the school, community holiday celebrations, and more.
Students help with the spring musical, by performing in the pit orchestra. This group meets from December to March to perform a very high level of difficulty music, and assist with the vocalists in putting together a high quality event. This year's musical is Chitty Chitty Bang Bang! We hope to see you all there, February 27 - March 3.
